Welcome to this fourth installement of The Physical Media Appreciation Project! This week we travel back in time to 2021 as Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar. The film stars Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo (who also co-wrote the script) as two best friends who take a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Vista Del Mar to find themselves.
To be honest, Barb & Star is not my usual thing. It’s very, very silly, and I can find that kind of extreme silliness tiresome in other films. But not here - Barb & Star is lovely! What makes it so lovely and allows the film to embrace silliness is the genuine friendship at the heart of the story. Wiig and Mumolo have worked together quite a bit, most notably writing Bridesmaids together back in 2011, and their chemistry has an ease and comfort. The characters themselves are completely supportive of each other. They just want their friend to be happy and lead a fulfilled life. May everyone have a Barb to their Star (or vice versa)!
